Description
CATERPILLAR HFO Power Plant – 100 MW Heavy Fuel Oil-Based Generation Facility
The CATERPILLAR HFO Power Plant is a large-scale, heavy-duty thermal power solution designed to deliver 100 MW of continuous power using Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) as the primary energy source. Ideal for regions where HFO remains a cost-effective option, the system is built around Caterpillar C280-series or similar multi-cylinder, four-stroke, high-speed diesel engines.
Depending on the configuration, the plant typically includes 4 to 5 generating sets, each capable of delivering 20–25 MW. The engines operate at 1,200 to 1,800 RPM, and are engineered for continuous-duty cycles, with maintenance intervals of 1,500 to 2,000 hours. The plant features both air or water cooling systems depending on site needs, and voltage ratings between 11 kV to 15 kV, supporting both 50 Hz or 60 Hz grids.
Fuel consumption ranges from 180 to 220 g/kWh, with a total plant efficiency of 40–45%. Emissions can be managed using SCR systems, electrostatic precipitators, or wet scrubbers, ensuring regulatory compliance. The total system footprint is approximately 1–2 hectares (10,000–20,000 m²), and plant start-up takes 10–30 minutes, initiated by diesel or grid power.
This plant is well-suited for deployment in remote areas, industrial zones, or utility-scale backup applications. Full customization is possible based on regional grid frequency and voltage standards.
